So how do others do those shaftless crush grind pepper mills? Any tips?

I bought some recently thinking they would be fun, but am scratching my head about how to best use them. Have some half baked ideas, but also some questions.

How does one refill the pepper? Is the top pulled off all the time?

What designs have others done with them?

I have a pair of mills made by T&G that use those mechanisms.

Basically imagine a traditionally shaped mill. Now about 20% up from the base there is a join/seam (2nd cove from the bottom) and this is the part you rotate to actuate the mechanism, while holding the rest of the body. Filling is via a threaded top - ingenious as when you remove it the bit that remains forms a concave hollow leading into the body i.e. no need for holding your hand around as a funnel while filling.

These mills work incredibly well which is what led me to wanting to turn some more using the crush grind mechanism - but that is also why I haven't turned anymore yet - these work very well and have lasted me about 7 years now.

Hmm. I have done thread cutting, but not all woods can take those threads. Maybe one of those thread cutting sets from carbatech that they have for rustic chairs.

The little plug top is removed to refill and supposed to have o-rings to seal it, no need for threads, although it could easily be done.
