Problem with the X axis

I need some help, tonight I was cut a sign out and things were going as they should
I started to get a bit cold turn my back on the machine to light the patio heater, when I looked
back at the router I noticed the gantry was not square to the table, so I hit the Big Red Button.
I thought I had broken a flex coupler or lead screw as that has happened before. Everything checked
out OK so I squared the gantry back up and run it up and down the table a couple of times, no problems.
I'm running two stepper motors on the X axis that are slaved together, after a while I noticed every thing was
OK heading to home/"0"/X- but heading away from home X+ the gantry would twist.
I worked out the the "A" axis motor was turning anti-clock wise, didn't matter what way I jogged. The "X"
motor turned both directions.
I'm using a Gecko G540 stepper drive, so I swapped the "X" and "A" axis lead around and now the "X" axis
will run anti-clock wise.
To me this indicates a problem with the G540, is there anything else that would cause a stepper motor
to only run in one direction when X+ or X- is pushed?
Is the G540 serviceable or is better to get a new one?

The G540 is certainly serviceable and Gecko will probably do it once for free, at least that used to be their policy.

Are you running the same Stepper on your Z axis if so swap around and see if the problem persists.
If its is gone I would be checking wires then the motor.

I had something similar in a way and it was at the start of where the wire connects to the winding was shorting out on the 380oz stepper I had, I introduced some hot glue to to stop the short.

Kind of all I have at the moment otherwise contact who you purchased it off.

Came home tonight and turned the router on and everything was working ok.
I jogged the gantry up and down the table for about 20 minutes and it did what
it told to do.
The only problem now is can I trust it to be ok or do I have to stand over it with one finger
on the Big Red Button.

Hi Ken,
An intermittent problem is the worst problem you can have.
I would not trust my machine if such a problem presented.
WillyInBris suggestion is the best idea because if you put the suspect driver on Z or even Y axis it will do the least damage to your machine. Screwing the X axis isn't a good thing.
Yes it sounds like a driver or the wiring on that driver.
So in the meantime hand on the big red button. :)

This is almost certainly caused by a bad wire or connection somewhere.
Check the connections at both ends of the motor and also test the cable itself.
Continual flexing of the cable could also have caused cracking of the copper.
