Chassis Mount and Concealed Nuts Question

Hi Folks,

I'm currently fixing up an old guitar amp built by my father. The chassis was originally in two sections which I've joined together. The chassis is going into a new cabinet and the way it's worked out, I won't have access to the inside of the chassis when it comes time to mount it in the cabinet (hope that makes sense!). I was going to get some long bolts and run them right through the chassis however I was thinking that there might be a way to put a fixed nut inside the chassis before it's closed up and then use a shorter bolt.

What's the best sort of thing to use for this? I've had a quick look and come across plate nuts, blind bolts, etc. but I'm not sure which sort of thing would be best. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

They look like the right sort of thing but don't they require a special riveting tool? I only need to do four bolts so it might not be worth it.

Nutserts is what your after. You can buy an insert tool like a rivet gun, but if you can hold the threaded barrel (vice grips) you can crimp them up with your own tool consisting of a bolt that suits the nutsert thread, a nut and a couple of greased up washers. You basically make your own little crimping tool.

Could you explain that a bit more - any chance of a pic or two just to see how it works?
