hi richard ,
ive got a london plane tree out the front but the missus wont let me cut it down!
sorry , wish i could help.
seeyasoon mik.
Frome Road in Adelaide is the place. Mind you, you will end up in prison if you get caught.
Richard, just HOW deep south do youwant to go?
The local council here tells me that they are close to calling the London plane tree a weed..
mind you I have cut down 3 in my yard over the last 10 years!
Before wood turning was introduced to me DOH!
Met a very knowledgeable aroborist/horticulturist the other day and somehow the talk turned to London Plane trees. Turns out the wood dust/shavings have a similar effect on the lungs as asbestos fibres!! Good luck finding some but be extra careful when working it.
Cheers, Tim
Hi Guy's, thanks for the replies. I've been up in the forest chasing some odditys.
Doorstop, as soon as I can sort out the logistics I will contact you.
Thanks again.
It doesn't seem to be commercially traded, which is a pity since it's fine timber for turning. I recently scored a good length of thick trunk left by tree loppers on a nature strip.
The Brits also call it Lacewood, and when you see some of the figuring you'll understand why. It's said that our plane trees are a hybrid, which makes me wonder whether they're London planes or something else.
I've turned a few pieces and haven't found the dust to be worse than other species.
Cheers,
Ern
Hi Richard,
I know this is a bit old but I just saw it. If you're still looking for London Plane contact Peter at http://www.woodcentre.com.au/
I saw some there a few weeks ago. It looks beautiful. They are in Toronto 2.5 hours north of Sydney. I know it's a long way from you but it might be worth a try.
Cheerio
Phil:)
How much do you want?
Richard I'm the guy that doorstop says has the london plane. A couple of slabs aprox 400 x 50 x 2000.:)Quote:
