spherical clamp?

I'm not into carving but have this item from someone (deceased) who was, and I'm not sure what to call it as I advertise it. Can someone describe it for me please? The closest thing I've found on the 'net is the Jerry Rig Ball Positioner. This thing came from England; it is heavy (about 6 kg) and has a 'sphere' of about 75-80mm and a solid stem (not tubular) of 300mm long and 38x38mm cross section. Looks like it is a serious bit of kit for very heavy duty work.

Allows you to freely position the work however you want to.

I agree with China.
There's a temporary base plate missing which would be the interface with the carving.
If the movement is very secure and steady, worth saving until some additional work can be found and added.

I agree; it's part of a wood carving vise (work positioned). The solid bar is clamped to the workbench with some F-clamps, or clamped in a regular vise with the missing plate attached to the shaft on the sphere. The two bolts on either side of the ball are tightened to hold it in a specific position, or loosened slightly for repositioning. Here's a photo of mine in operation (different brand, but same principal). Mine is bolted to a piece of timber, which is clamped to the workbench. Can be portable this way.

Just realised, my 50+ year old fly tying vice has a similar ball-joint base.

OK. I've now got the base plates for it and am putting it up for sale on the market place.
