Looking for a hobbyist willing to do a CNC job for me

Hi, I would like to have some 1200 x 600mm sheets of 3mm MDF routed with a bunch of 12mm holes for acoustic diffusers. If someone is able to and willing to do this for me please PM me with a price to do 16 of these sheets. I’ll attach a DWG file of what I’m looking for.

You might be better uploading a PDF file, not everyone will have AutoCAD or CAD software.

I’ll see if I can find a way to do that. I didn’t do the design, it’s from someone on an audio forum who published it for member use. I was of the understanding that this is what was required to do CNC routing.

DXF (Drawing Interchange Format) files were introduced by AutoCAD and I guess most CAD software can open them these days, CNC Router software uses vectors taken from the DXF drawings

Thanks for that. I wonder how hard it would be to cut the sheets, stack them and just drill them by hand.

You're in the wrong state or I'd do it for you. Shipping would be a pain in the .

Pretty simple CNC job - 4 full sheets - on my half sheet machine I'd split the sheets into half, stack them, bore, and then split the halves into the required quarters.

Looks like a pain in the proverbials to do it by hand if you need it to be accurate.

Might be worth asking a local workshop with a CNC what they'd charge. It's not a complex job from a programming or machine point of view, so it may not be that expensive.

Thanks for the info. I will make some enquires on costs here and I was happy to pay to have it done. I do have the option to just make them as 2 x 600mm x 600mm sheets, that’s how they’re designed the 1200 x 600 is just doubled up. They get attached to 1200mm x 600mm absorption panels so it’s just as easy to attach 2 instead of one. If I run into difficulties getting it done I might get in touch, 600mm units would be easier to ship.

I expect there will be someone in Vic who can do it. I also found a CNC unit for sale but it’s $4k

Looking at the pattern it's a book matched image, so if you have a plotter (or A3 printer and print out parts of the image to stick together) you could print out half the pattern and drill the holes in that half and then flip it over (use that half has a template) to give you the other book match part of the design, that would save marking out a full image. Then when you have the full 600mm x 600mm template use that on your stacked pile of sheets.

Use a forster bit and put the drill in a portable drill press to keep your holes plumb when drilling through the stack of sheets, something like this would do the job

I’m making this out of 3mm MDF, how many of these could I drill through at once? If I made them 600mm x 600mm and stacked them 32 deep, so nearly 100mm thick, then I could just do them on the drill press.

Wish I’d known about that drill guide you linked before I tapped a couple hundred holes in my 16mm thick welding table top…

It will be limited to the plunge depth of the press, but you maybe able to get up to 50mm depending on length of drill bit, which will eat into the plunge depth.

I discussed manually drilling this with a mate yesterday and now I feel like a complete idiot… He suggested that I just put a Forster bit into my mill…. I never thought of using metal working gear with wood, funny the mindset you get. The mill has a large table so I can just bolt it down and move the table. I could possibly use the DRO to make positioning the bit easy and accurate. I’ve ordered a tungsten Forster bit.

I’ll get back here when my bit arrives and I get some results.
