Further to Flats' topic, I'm thinking a 14'' band saw would perform most tasks of a table saw in the 'toys to small tables' type of range and allow some "scroll" work too.
Has this been debated already? where?

This applies only to small work.
Yes the bandsaw is more versatile, but it will not leave as clean a surface when ripping, and there will be a greater degree of work (planing, sanding, scraping) afterwards.

I've been a pro table saw person for some time but have recently aquired a nice bandsaw & kan see why a lot of people like them.
It comes down to a couple of things.
table saw
much better finish
much wider riping & crosscutting ability
can do non thru sawing finctions
band saw
nowhere near as prone to throwing things at you
much less violent action
free hand sawing possible & safe
greater depth of cut
smaller foot print
quieter
the band saw is a wonderfull device & has many things going for it but I'd still buy a table saw first.
there are things each can do that the other simply has no hope in the world of doing.
hoe this helps
cheers
Thanks for that food for thought.
I s'pose when I look into that night course I'll be able to compare.
