Timber for artwork
Hi All,
I'm a budding pyrographer and i am finding it difficult to find wood around melbourne. Currently i practice on plywood and some pine, which is great, but it doesn't give a great finished product. I need to find some interesting timber to work with, preferably lightly coloured. I've looked at some Camphor Laurel and that looks great. I also need it to be quite thin, about 10mm tops and the wider the better. I'm trying my hand at making timber photo albums and "burning" my art on there, hence the 10mm thickness required.
I know there's a lot of guru's on this forum and was hoping that you all might have some information of where i can get this kind of timber. I've tried Mathews in ringwood, but their minimum thickness is 25mm and i don't have the capacity to cut it thinner myself.
Any information is greatly welcome.
Cheers,
Paul.

My dear ol' mum used to do some of the best pyrography I've seen and one of her preferred timbers was Jacaranda - should be able to find some of that down your way.

Timber for Artwork
There was a small firm in Adelaide a few years ago who used a laser to engrave complex designs on timber. They loved Paulownia. (white and light) Port Phillip Shutters at Mordialloc sells paulownia panels 2.1 x 1.2 14 mm thick for under $100.00. There solid timber and I'm sure they could dress them down to 10 mm if that is what you really need. It would be worth a call. 03 9588 2533
