I remember seeing an article on this piece in a magazine many years ago,
it also showed how it was made and marked out to be carved, incredible!
If I remember correctly, this was made when Dutch Elm disease was killing off huge quantities of the species through Britain, so there was lots and lots of Elm sculpting and carving happening at the time.

Brilliant work! Wonder how the carver got his head around the perspective to carve everything to line up so well. Just looking at it, its hard to tell where one stump ends and another begins.
