Bare foot, do a quick search limited to this sub forum on '038 magnum' you'll be able to see what guys like Bob and Carl have done with this kind of saw...
This is the kind of thing you'll get
The thread 6 up from the bottom might be able to help:D
Allan, unfortunately that linked search doesn't work.
According to the Mike Acres Site (http://www.acresinternet.com/cscc.ns...b?OpenDocument) the 038 can handle a 32" bar although that's probably for softwood. At only 60cc, in Aussie hardwood I'd say 24 or 25" is probably the longest I would run.
Are you intending to mill with this saw?
oh ok:( well anyway Bob, what you said is what was said in the thread I referred to... 24"
my main everyday saw is an old 034av i run a 25" bar on it without problems. i could run a 30" re but i would go to skip chain if i was doing that.
it all depends on what u want to cut and how quick u wanna cut it.:2tsup:
thanks guys, I looked up a site that just sells stihls and the site says that the 038 magnum is a 72cc saw,but does not recomend bar lengt. so I thought I could run a longer bar as the saw is only 2 years old {apparently} and still looks like new, I was hoping to run a 36inch bar for I want to try and slab some timber but the site I was give to look at by, sigidi and bob tells me it is only 60cc. so now Im realy confused, is there some other site I could look at.
Sorry guy I forgot to that you blokes for the replys and helping me thankyou.
i have a shindaiwa 757 ,75cc, 5.5 hp and a 36in bar with skip tooth chain is ok in softwood . slow but ok .a 28in bar works a lot better though . try stihl website ms381 is 72cc doesnt show 380 . cheers bob
Yep the 038 Magnum version is a 72 cc saw, its a mid 80's designed saw, built strongly, pre significant EPA regs, and looked after should last you 20 years. Here is a link to some specs (Model Profile: 038 AVME).
But even with skip chain I wouldn't recommend milling Aussie hardwood wider than about 20" with 70 cc saw. 36" bars that cut 30" wide are really 90+cc saw territory. Sure the 038 will cut it but you will lead the saw to an early death.
I mill small stuff (500 mm or less) using a 25" bar on my 70 cc 441 running loprofile chain. That's about the max length of bar you can use with that chain because the lowprofile chain stretches too much.
I have a 038 Magnum and Stihl recommend 20" bar as maximum.
It will run a 25" bar, but if you want to use it for slabbing, I recommend that you get a bigger saw as the 038 will struggle cutting slabs with a 36" bar, I've done slabbing with a 25" bar but it struggles even at that size, will rip and crosscut no worries but hates slabbing
:2tsup: thankyou very much for all the advice, and Im sorry, and greatful, you blokes could understand my bad spelling.
i didnt notice any bad spelling
Maybe I've been around here too long also, I didn't see much problem in ya spelling Barefoot. Hope we helped you out:2tsup:
thanks for that cheers.
Aside from your own hey carl?
seriously the 038 will drive a 25 inch bar comfortably, 30 inches it will probably do. the 038 was a bit understated and although it didn't rev as hard as an 044 (which is actually a little smaller in ccs but higher in rated horsepower) it will lug very well and doesn't mind being loaded up. The 038 was always a thirsty saw and honestly due to this fact I could cut as much firewood in a day with an 034 for the simple fact that I would go that bit longer between fuel stops. as for the ms381 they are to my knowledge no longer imported by stihl australia as the filtration system was sub par and most people in that range would buy a 441 or a 460 or a 390 farm boss. I believe that they are still made in brazil or mexico but are not supported here by stihl.
all in all though the 038 was an honest tough saw with enough balls for any weekend warrior, I would gladly add one to my collection if the opportunity arose.:2tsup:
