Treadmill motor?

Evening all,

Whilst doing a clean out at work I found a treadmill motor and was thinking it could look good on my older lathe here:wink:. I didn't take down any details but it's a 240v and I remember seeing something about running at 1700 rpm. Getting it set up to run variable speed should be fairly simple too. There's 5 wires coming out of the motor (+/- & earth) and I'm guessing the other two are to control the speed. These machines usually run at between 2 & 3 horsepower which is a truckload more than I have available on the TL1200 I'm playing on at the moment.

So now I will hand it over to the forum for thoughts & ideas...

good idea/bad idea or other?

The motor is off a Nautilus treadmill but can't remember the model at the moment.

Thanks Joe, looks like it has potential for a metal lathe but doesn't look like many people have had success on a wood one. The motor isn't going to cost me anything so I will bring it home anyway and have a play.
