This is a photo of a low angle block plane - a 65 - I'm thinking of buying from the US.
Is the pitting on the sole likely to affect the performance of the plane, or continually collect rust? How much of an issue is pitting on a plane sole?
{EDIT: Doesn't really matter, I found one with a much nicer sole for about the same, so I won't take the risk. Still, it's a question I'd like to know the answer to - does pitting of the sole affect the use of a plane? Can it be repaired?}
The pitting on the sole won't affect performance at all. The pitting on the iron might be another matter, it looks pretty rusty to me. I'd wait for something better, surely there are plenty on the market.Quote:

Thats hardly any rust at all and will clean up just fine. There is some work to do on the blade however it is only time and elbow grease. If I found that plane at the right price I would grab it.
Have a look at past posts on plane restoration. Some very very ugly nasty planes have been got back in working order. I have a No 7 with quite deep pits on the sole but can still joint a square edge with it.
