Big machine guard made.

Many moons ago i was a sheet metal worker and made 100's of these over the years. Well today i was called to duty to make a few more right away. So anyway here are a few pics on how they are made. Layed out from a sheet of 14 ga black steel then the side is wrapped around the layout line and tacked. Then it is 100% welded inside and all of the excess trimmed off the outside. Then an identical sheet that has the same layout except reversed is layed on the top of the bench and the sheet with the side is tacked the same way to it. Then it has the big hole cut out with a nibbler so i can get my head inside and weld it 100%. Then it is trimmed on the outside also. Now some more layout work and a few more cut outs with the nibbler and wizz wheel on a grinder. Then the guard is split longways and angle tacked to bolt it back together. Some exp metal is added as well as some bolts and nuts and it is pretty much done adding some handles and a few mounting brackets...Bob

I wish I had the facility for a bit of sheet work. I have a couple of grinders that require belt guards. They might have to be fibreglass.

This company has no slip rolls so you shouldn't have a problem forming the parts. The sides were just wrapped around a large dia pipe. I was taking them home and rolling them but the plant mgr didn't like the idea. He asked why i have a roll at home and i said doesn't everyone :) ...Bob

You don't know what your missing out on without a mig, heaps of jobs can be easily done with them.

As for what we have at home, most people would never dream of working at home, instead they head to the pub after work to unload there spare money.

I've even managed (with much applied force) to roll some 3x25 steel flat, but that's probably about he limit without making up a new handle

Thanks Bob, this a really helpful post. I have been thinking about how to modify a fan body (round with four outlets to spiral with one outlet) for a dust collection system that I am gradually working on and this is the way to do it. I will have a go.

They are belt guards for natural gas compressors that are made where i work. The CAT gas engines that drive these things are 6,000+ HP. Everything is huge and heavy on these units. Here is a short vid that CNBC shot last year of the shop. I make the ladder also thats shown on the floor in the beginning. I am also at 1:28 in the vid grinding one of my small pressure tanks i make. Enjoy...Bob
Shaking Off The Rust Belt

I noticed on the guard that mesh was used in a small area. Is that for visual inspection of the belts?

I liked your reply to the plant manager, bit of quick thinking there.
Good to see you in the vid too, that's big work there not to mention the shed.
