Hi all,
I am asking this here rather than the renovate forum. I am looking to buy a combination arc/tig welder for home use. Currently I need a unit to weld some steel sections for a garage I am building with basic stick welding, i.e. bracing, beams, posts etc. probably 5mm maximum.
Later I want to have the capability of TIG welding aluminum for some projects I have in mind. Budget of $1000, but if I am dreaming it could be pushed to $2k. What do you suggest?

To Tig weld Aluminium, you are goin to need a tig that has AC current.
only reputable AC/DC tig with a 1K budge i can recomend would be this

If you search token tools on this forum you will find there are some good reports about this guy, i have no affiliation with him, i am just goin by what i found when i was reasearching to buy a new Tig welder.

I think you may need to spend closer to $2K to get anything basically Ally capable. Token Tools has a good rep on here and should be able to supply a suitable machine.
Stick machines with scratch start DC TIG are cheaper but more limited what you can do easily.
I have an Everlast PowerTig 250EX and using it for over 2 years on Ally, great for stick work and it's been great so far, very easy to use with the knobs on the panel and all covered by Australian 5 year warranty.
Mine is a 3 phase unit but they have single phase version 230EX I imagine should be good.
You will need a gas account for the Ally welding so budget for that when the time comes
