When I was a photo student at Art Center School in the 1960s, we would put a camera on a turning phonograph turntable with the lens locked open looking up at a penlight swinging from a string like a pendulum.
Many wonderful patterns, especially if you made multiple exposures with different color gels over the lens.
Another thing we would do was make a several second exposure through the windshield on a rainy night while driving in a part of town with a lot of neon lights, traffic lights, etc.
