Decking joists, need 2 sizes???

Hi Folks,
Been enjoying the great reading on here about screw vs nail deck so thought what better place to get a bit of advice.
I am building a deck and have followed span tables but have reached a bit of a hitch.
There is a part of my deck where the joist spans are around 2.1m instead of the rest which are about 1.4m.
This of course means I need something like 140x45's instead of the rest being 90x45.
Can anyone see a way around this? I presume I cannot botch the joists to match the height? And I can't notch the stump for the bearer as it runs the wrong way (hard to explain). Could I use a different type of wood for these joists perhaps? It's all treated pine with merbau decking. Joists are about 420mm apart.

Is this 2.1 m span able to be bolted to an existing wall or pillars if so u will be fine to use the 90 x 45

Why not just put in an extra bearer in that section?

One possible alternative would be to check the span tables and see if you can get away with 90x45's... it may be possible with much closer spacing. (eg. 300mm instead of 600)

(And yes, it is NOT recommended that you botch the joists or the bearers! Not if you want it passed/signed off at any future inspection! ;) )

Marcus, there is an easy fix. Your joists run at 90 degrees to your bearers - yes. The 90x45 joist can span your bearers (sit on top) whilst your 140x45 can be end notched so that 90mm of depth sits on top of the bearer and the bottom 50 mm of depth butts to the face of the bearer and is supported by a joist hanger at each bearer. :U Regards, Timboz

Hey Guys,
Cheers for this, so I can botch the end of the joist to get the height match and then use a joist hanger to support the lower part of it, I think that makes sense.
I've also found a hardwood span table that says F17 will span 2.1m, so this may save me a bit if work!
