Competition. Would you?

A couple of years ago I would not have even though of entertaining the idea of entering a competition in wood turning. I have been following this thread https://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/australian-woodturning-exhibition-2014-a-185507 and enjoyed what has been posted.

I am thinking that I might send something in next year. I have to come up with something as I only have less than a year to enter. I am not expecting anything other than to gain experience and by able to push myself.

So who among us wood turners are also thinking about entering? Nice to hear from the first timer.

I've been watching that thread to, staring enviously at the pics. I'd love to eventually enter something, but I'm where you were a couple of years ago - not even thinking of entertaining the idea of entering a competition.
Next year's is too early for me, but I'm hoping to give it a shot the following year.

There's some pretty awesome work on display, both in the thread and on the AWTEX site in the photo gallery including my favourite, 'Cinderella's Carriage'. More than a little intimidating to me.

Good luck with your entry for next year Christos. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I'm half entertaining having a go at entering something in next year (I half entertained the idea for this year, but with one thing and another it didn't eventuate).

At the moment though, I've committed to putting a piece in a staff art show at work. I've got two weeks to make it!

Been there, done that with AWTEX, but unfortunately no T-shirt to buy. Working up to open but savouring Intermediate while it lasts. :wink:

I would urge any turners who have got past the initial phobia of entering competitions to have a go. It does not have to be the AWTEX first go but at least seek out your local show or agricultural show competition and enter some of your work. There are a lot of very good turners about who will not enter comps for one reason or another and a lot of shows and comps about that are desperately trying to survive with dwindling entry numbers & entrants.

It becomes a win - win for all in most cases. More promotion for the comp, raises awareness of our craft / art in the wider community (i.e. improves sales prospects?), gives entrants some feedback on their progress and achievements but more importantly increases camaraderie between turners - unless of course you are in it for sheep stations. You may not get rich financially but most likely you will strike it lucky and meet many good turners & make some lasting friends through the experience, as I have through AWTEX. :U

I grew up in the country and was encouraged to enter the local shows the mote enteries as whole gives patrons more to look at!
My old boss would not enter a show as if he didn't win it would affect his business, thought that was a sad mentality!
I'm keen to enter the exhibition but would like to be down there also! So it's on my list of things to do.

This year at the Sydney show I couldnt find a competition other than one for high school students. But then the ownership of the event has changed make of that what you will

Sad they don't have a comp. The Brisbane boys have the Redcliffe show "Woodcraft" section. http://www.redcliffeshow.org.au/file...aft%202014.pdf
