MJ 3442 Bandsaw
I hope to be in a position to buy my first real bandsaw soon. Does anyone know anything about MJ bandsaws. Looked at the MJ3442 16 inch saw today at Moonah Machinery, Hobart. Moonah Machinery Looks very solid and very well made. The 3hp motor should mean it will have plenty of power for resawing. The cutting depth of 250mm is a bit less than some but should not be a big issue for what I have in mind. The price, $1250, fits my budget and seems very good especially as the saw is in Hobart and it would cost $2-300 on top of the purchase price to get anything else from the mainland down here. Any thoughts on the MJ brand would be appreciated.

I have an MJ344 which is smaller and has a 370mm throat, 200 mm height and 2Hp motor. It is not the same as the Resaw MJ344 listed in the Moonah site.
It is OK, but I was disappointed with the amount of slop in the track and surprised at how noisy it ran. It has enough power for any of my uses but felt that I got a cheaper saw than I paid for.
I you use the Mitre Gauge much it may pay to get a better after market model.
I suspect what you are looking at is probably a good step up from mine. I did look at the Carbatec at the time but felt they would have come from the same factory and was paying more for no extra benefit. It would be ideal to try one if you can but not sure that anyone allows that these day.
I like the look of the Powermatic that Carbatec now carry but you are paying a lot for a much smaller machine.
I am sure that you will be happy with whatever you choose.

I had the little one for about a year. It was a decent machine, but mine was second third hand and needed love.
You are right about the shipping costs. It could turn a good mainland price into a very expensive tassie one.
The machine is pretty generic, the model is rebadged into half the models sold in the US....that means upgrades are easy to obtain...such as blades, tyres and guides.

Try Carbatec Band saws, they have very nice solid saws and price is reasonable.
