LOOKING FOR SEASONED 50 X 38 2.4M HWD BATTENS.
Hi all. I asked a question a few years ago re' timber batten selection for enclosing under my house (check out https://www.woodworkforums.com/111906...ed-unfinished/). Well it still hasn't happened but I'm hoping to do it before end of this year. I've revised what I'm doing and will now use 2.4m 50 x 38 (or 38 x 38) hardwood battens fixed at 675cs. I'd like to use seasoned timber and coat them with Sikkens. They will be fixed vertically in the valleys of a fibreglass square corrugated profile sheet which will waterproof the wall.
So I've been looking at what timber to get. I've been quoted around $3/m for a 50x38 hwd roof batten but this works out pretty expensive and pretty sure those things are green. I've considered getting 4.8m x 100 x 38 fence rails and halving them followed by ripping to get 4 battens out of each rail for around $2.75 per batten so a lot cheaper (saving around $1000 all up) but of course I've got to cut them. Happy to do that to save a grand.
Only hassle I have with this is they are most likely going to be green due to being treated. This of course won't work with the natural timber look and coating them with Sikkens.
So if anyone knows where I can get seasoned but not green 75 x 38 fence rails or seasoned but not green hwd 50 x 38 battens then I'd appreciate the input. I'm in Brisbane but happy to travel a couple of hours if it will get me what I want and save some dollars. If it makes more sense to get green timber and let it dry for several weeks then I'm happy to do that just as long as I know I can store them so they won't bend.
Thanks for the assistance, Brad.
