Filling bolt holes with resin, unhappy with finish

Hi.
I am making a dining table from recycled railway sleepers. There are several bolt holes that I have filled with an opaque resin but am unhappy with the finish (doh!). The holes have an almost green tinge and stand out from the natural timber colour.
Can anyone help with a solution to
A) removing the set resin from the surface holes - the best solution I have found is a heat gun and scraping the softened resin out of the holes. I am hoping that I might only need to scrape a few mm out to then reapply a better finish....
B) a better finish
Please help!

What sort of resin did you use? If you wanted clear you needed to use clear casting polyester or epoxy clear casting resin.

If now green it will show through any clear top coat. An alternative is dig out some then recast with tinted resin (black works well), provided you don't mind coloured. Glow in the dark is very much in fashion, or some other feature type product (eg pauwa shell, coins etc). Dig out some resin, lay a thin layer of clear resin then place whatever on top, then pour more clear resin in over top (after painting surface with resin first to minimise bubbles).

I used fibreglass resin (without the fibres)
How would you suggest I dig a bit of the resin out? Not interested in putting anything in like coins etc. I think the best option would be black tinted resin - issue being how to get existing resin out and will the new resin stick to the remainder of the old resin?

Yes fibreglass resin has a yellow/green tinge and eventually can turn milky too. You can tint ok though, so just dig out enough to be ~5mm below the final surface, then refill with tinted resin. The new resin will stick to the previous resin below as long as it is clean and dust free. You can use grout tint powder or even a tiny amount of black oil paint or pigment will work. Make sure you overfill it then sand down. When done sand to a fine finish and it may look whitish, but as soon as you apply your finish it will become nice and black.

You could use a drill with the appropriate sized bit to remove the bulk of the resin. If you want a clear resin I use Casting and Embeding resin from bunnings. Cheers WC

You can use a small chisel or even a nail starting at the middle, it should fracture easily, then pick out the pieces. Or use drill and pick out leftovers as WC suggests

I'm definitely not an expert but I'd drill a few mm deep and apply something black then coat with clear poly.

I recently used cabots oil based clear poly to fill a large size knot hole on this desk, it looks a little yellow but barely noticeable, the hole is almost 10mm deep at the bottom

Hi, your best bet is probably West System epoxy resin mixed with Diggers black oxide.
If the holes are very deep I would plug with a dowel to reduce the amount of resin needed as it's expensive stuff.
Be sure to tape any holes underneath as the resin has very little viscosity and can escape.
