Clear epoxy resin to highlight the cracks&holes in old, now milled sleepers assistanc

I have a mate who has milled enough old railway sleepers to approx 150x40 to make a feature floor in his "Man Cave".

He wants to keep the character of the old railway sleepers and asked me if I know anything about clear epoxy resin to fill/highlight the cracks & holes.

He's also looking at adding some black in the spike holes so would need pigment too.

Well of course the forum is the font of all knowledge so please ladies & gents can you share your knowledge, experience and know how so I can pass it on, thank you.

Peter, if the holes are black (or very dark) inside then clear epoxy will look black anyway.

No, I've only ever used small quantities, and that was Araldite. I think many seem to like the West system which may be available from Carbatec. I spotted a reasonable range in Home Hardware the other day (dunno what brand though, but it wasn't West)

Aren't railway sleepers all full of chemicals that are slowly making their way into air, thus not particularly healthy?

Hi Crowie - have a look at the Bote Cote web site - no link sorry - just south of Brisbane off the motorway to Gold Coat. I have used their clear resin and added powdered graphite for a dark colour but with some hint of fleck - not bad. But as said if holes are fairly deep may not need any colour.

Very helpful and sell in big range of quantities.

I also like west system clear epoxy. It's very nice. If you choose west system or any 1:5 mix you have to be very accurate in your measurements by either using one of their pumps or a digital scale. Do not mix it by eye because it is too easy to get it wrong. If you are lazy like me and can''t be bothered most of the time, then get a 1:1 mix.
Another point to consider is that if the man cave door is an external door, and is not going to be painted. Then normal epoxy will fail under sunlight sooner or later. You will need to get an epoxy that is ultraviolet proof. Solid Solutions provide a SOLID COAT 607 EXTERIOR CLEAR EPOXY RESIN, which would suit your mate's needs, I think.
