I have made laminated acrylic pen blank before and I used ca glue but you have to sand the parts before gluing

Thanks Stephen,
after the first delaminates, the edges were sanded and still came apart, even after leaving to cure for a week
What ca glue are you using thick or thin

I have made at least two laminated acrylic [left over cut offs] and used medium ca and had no issues as stated make sure fit is good and clean. what i find is if i laminate them together with the glue on the cut surface no problem I don't bother sanding because the band saw cut for blanks is sufficient for bond.
Thin
Hi
About 5 years ago I wanted to do something similar using off cuts from acrylic blanks. I tried epoxy, CA with different thicknesses, holding methods, .. for sometime I had no success .. my test was always bending with my two hands and if it breaks no good..
Eventally I had a good result and have made dozens ... below is one of my first pens which is still going strong.
I found as others have suggested rough not smooth. I give each side of each piece a firm sand on a nice flat surface with 240-180 grit. Be careful not push too hard since the surfaces need to be reasonably flat. The CA takes up most of the gaps and I used medium thickness CA from GPW. Thin was too runny. I am quite liberal with CA and make sure both surfaces are wet .... bit messy but it works.
A trick .. I made a small clamping jig to keep the pieces together since the CA makes the pieces slide off each other. I don't clamp tightly .. just firm. I found over clamping squashes out the CA and the pieces slip off each off. I make sure I give them a few days drying in the Qld sun ... sometimes there is undercured glue inside.
I remember trying a G clamp and then a vice but the pieces slipped over each other or I couldn't control the firmness .. I ll try and find the jig .. somewhere under a pile of Goggomobil parts.

Thank you for pic . This is what i am trying to achieveAttachment 403400
I made this pen from black and white mother of pearl. I use epoxy for most of my segmented pens. I use System III T88 epoxy and let it cure for 24 hours before working. Never had a failure.

Thank you ill give that a try
Chris I am sure there are blanks around that you can buy like the ones you pictured you just need to look arround. Unless you are doing it for the chalenge then I wouldn't bother with the work and trouble involved.
Cheers ian
You can do it with polyclay. The squares won't be as crisp as a glued acrylic but it can be wrapped around the tube so the squares don't turn into rectangles when turned. This is one done by my wife, Marla, 8 or 9 years ago. Desk needs refinishing doesn't it? :)

I am pretty sure that the shops selling acrylic sheets have special glues for acrylic. It sort of melts surfaces of acrylic parts and bods them together.
Worth a try thank you
Great looking pen glad to see some segmented pens being made
