PE McManus Scroll Saw
Just won this Scroll saw on Flee Bay.... although it is yet to arrive I would love to know if anyone has any info or pics that they would like to share.... Hadn't even heard of this maker before, but after a bit of googling found some images of a saw bench as well. Any way here are a few pics to see what I am starting with.

Never used a scroll saw before... are they best set up on a bench or some sort narrow stand that you can get your legs either side of... seems to be two different ways to mount them after a bit of Googling.

Couldn't believe my luck today..... Browsing the Rocky swap meet today.... and low and behold another PE McManus Scroll saw followed me home:D...... This one is a little more complete than my other purchase and has a working electric motor. This one has been modified to take band-saw segments as blades but that will easily be rectified. An interesting point to note is that PE McManus numbered their machines with what I believe to be a numerical number plus month and year of manufacture.. The scroll saw above is 304 10 46 and the one I picked up today is 424 2 47. I found some pics of little PEM saw benches that seem to have the same labeling system.... however the one I can ID the number on has 137 8 47 ..... with this in mind could that indicate that there are at least 424 scroll saws out there and 137 Bench saws... or do I have the numbering scheme all wrong.
Would be interested in seeing if others have a numbering scheme that fits in here somewhere.

and here is another saw bench that doesn't seem to have any numbering stamped on the badge.

There's a nice elegance about that saw. Great find!

I have just acquired one of these scroll saw beauties but without the motor or blade. What size motor is on yours and what size pulley is on the motor? This will save having to do trial and error to get it right. I'm in the middle of cleaning it up ready to give it a repaint.
Thanks

Nice one :).... was beginning to think I had the only two left in existence. What serial number does yours have?
The motor on mine is an old Pope washing machine motor 1/3hp 1420rpm...there is a 2 1/2 inch pulley on the motor.... I will need to take the Belt guard off to get at the one on the saw though. The saw that has no motor has a 4 1/2 inch pulley on it but I am thinking the other one looks a little smaller.
Post a few pics so we can see what the old girl looked like before you started working on her.

Thanks for that info, it is greatly appreciated. Will check the serial no tomorrow and let you know. Have just pressure blasted it to get all the grunge off, stripped it down and have started to paint it up. Will have to source some blades that fit or do you have a recommended type?

Sorry mate..... I haven't even started to work on the two that I have. Both are set up a bit different. One looks like it would have a normal Scroll saw blade and the other was setup with sections of 6mm bandsaw blades. I would think this was a modification and will look at taking it back to a standard blade type. From initial investigations the blade length seems to be non standard for modern 5"blades but I think you could shorten them so that they fit. I am thinking the blade length on these is about 3 1/2" long. I will be interested in seeing how the foot is tightened on your saw as the two that I have are slightly different.

Attachment 424230Attachment 424231Attachment 424232Thanks for your info Gaza58. Here is where I'm at, waiting for paint to harden, then reassemble it all. I have a motor in mind so I can set it up with minimal cost. (Pockets are very shallow.) Will keep you informed if I come across anything unusual. Also will add photos of the blade attachment mechanism for you.

Thanks for the Pics... Can't quite read the numbers on the plaque ...is it 473 6 47 That would make it a newer machine than my newest is 424 2 47.... That would also extend the number made to 473... would be interesting to know how many more are still floating around or have they all been sent to the scrap heap..... I did find an add for one in an old Sydney Newspaper back in the day and they were calling it a Jig saw..... I think that is what they called Scroll Saws back then anyway.

Back again. The blade is held in by the screw in bolt, but at the end of the bolt is a revolving stud (for want of a better description) that beds onto the blade while the bolt can still turn. Hope you can understand my lousy description. I have tried a coping saw blade and even with the pins on, it goes down into the centre of the shaft and same in the upper shaft.Attachment 424341 Will have to wait until I get the motor on to see if it works.

Thanks for the info... I didn't realise the shafts were hollow..... That should make life a lot easier to find suitable blades. You have motivated me into pulling my old girl apart and start cleaning her up. Did you have a chance to check the serial number?
-
serial no 476 6 47 as far as my eyes can see.
-
Don't go as far as I did and take the crankshaft out cause the pin to hold it in place is troublesome to put back in. I would just tip it on its side and wash the guts of it out. Then replace it with clean oil. hope you can get it up and productive soon.
-
Thanks... That makes your machine 476 June 1947 if I have the numbering correct.

Thanks for the tip... I was hoping not to take it out unless there was too much wear.:2tsup:......
Was thinking about painting the Alloy belt cover in that wrinkle black that they often use on Car tappet covers allowing the tops of the fins to be polished and show through..... a nod to my revhead days:D
