I have a 950x25x120 piece of Wenge that has been in the workshop for a couple of years
I am thinking about a document box of around 320 long 230 high and 230 wide made with hard maple Picture frame type sides and top ... and wenge infill panels on the sides and top.
I will resaw the Wenge to make 5mm panels for the book matched infill panels for the maple frames
I am looking for advice on the planing, joining the 5mm panels and finishing as it is the first time I have used the Wenge

OK .... over 190 views and not one comment .... I now understand why ....
The box is now completed ... huon pined and wenge ....
To put it in a short sentence ... wenge is an absolute bastard of a timber to use .... but an absolute brilliant display timber.
The issuers for me were that wenge is
a particularly dirty timber to mill ....
black dust ....
blunts the tools quickly,
sanding leaves ridges between the growth rings and the sapwood,
tear out using the highest and plane I have .... and even with a card scraper ......
shellac absorption rates vary greatly across the board ...
But for all that the end product was acceptable ..
NEVER AGAIN ...

Ive never used Wenge. But I remember walking past a pack of it at AFT years ago wondering it was.
I asked, they told me and I never forgot it.

Here is a pic of the inside ... I used cope and stick for the frames for each side and then mitred them .... and then added a vertical spline.
The bottom is velvet lined ...
The finish is hard shellac with traditional wax polish (Ubeaut)
The stiles on the frames are 20mm wider than the rails .... that way after allowing for the coverage of the legs the reveal is even on all sides of the frame
