So, in my never ending quest to plan more projects than I could possibly complete, I have a plan to firstly build a mountain dulcimer, as a skill builder for the harp my daughter wants.
Can any recommend a suitable but relatively low cost timber for the fretboard?
Would a piece of merbau or similar work?

I can't see why it would not work. Just about any hardwood would do. I made one a couple of years ago and used whatever wood I had around so the fretboard was NG rosewood. Back and sides were meranti but I shall call it Pacific maple to sound more up market and the top was Western Red Cedar recycled wall lining boards. With dulcimers there is a wide range of woods that can be used. I just gathered the info I needed from the net and found the build easier than I had expected. There are a few others on here made dulcimers also so if you have problems just ask.
