Antique wooden plane?
Need some expert opinions here.
A recently widowed friend said I should sort through her late husband's tools before she dropped them at the local Sallie's. He was a DIY'er rather than a Woodworker so I wasn't expecting much.
It was pretty much as expected apart from a nice brace 'n bit with a range of augers and a set of nice warding files but nestled in the bottom of his tool box was this.
I know nothing about wooden planes but wasn't about to see this one 'junked' so I rescued it. As you can see, it has an Alan Mathieson blade and the body is 17" long x 2.9" wide x 2.8" high. Here's some photos:
(Just spent half an hour trying to attach more photos showing the AM logo on the blade plus pictures of the sole and body without success - I'll try again later).
The long and short of it is, I found a web image of an apparently identical plane which is described as "Rare Antique 19th Century 'Alex Mathieson & Sons, Glasgow 17" Wooden Jack Plane".
I'll wait for comments after I've managed to upload the other photos before I contact Sotheby's

Can't see the pic you already uploaded but going from your description I would be holding on to it

Yeah. Sorry about that. It uploaded the image as an attachment and even I can't open it.
I'll edit the post and try again.

Hi Pete,
I wouldn't mind a photo of the brace too if you're able.
Cheers,
Geoff.

Mathieson made quality tools, but in my area if its just a regular jack plane its not worth more than the $5-$15 that all the other old woodie jack planes fetch, unless it has some extra special features. (they are fun to play with, but they're definitely over supplied and under appreciated)

Hi kwigly. Just joking about its value. I intend to keep and use it.
Geoff. I've given the brace to my son but I'll try and grab photos when I'm next over at his place.
Meanwhile, here's another attempt at the plane photos.
(D**n! Still no joy and I've even tried re-sizing the photos).
Try again later.
