Are you "restoring" or just after a user?
If the latter, simply measure the lengths of your chuck, the guide sleeves and the longest drill bit you intend to use. Add 'em all together with an extra inch or three extra elbow room. (You can always dock 'em shorter later.)
My father (may he RIP) had one that he'd modded to about 2' long, so he could fit augers for drilling railway sleepers and fence posts. Mind you, he used it more as a depth guide than anything... :rolleyes:
