I thought I'd tack this query on here. I've seen fairy rings, as Mark describes, in NZ when I was a kid. This a fairy ring, about a meter in diameter, but no mushrooms available, it's slowly killing the lawn as the circle widens. Has anyone got a suggestion what to do about it?
Cheers,
Geoff.
Hi Geoff
Natural remedy is to aerate the damaged area, fertilize and irrigate. This probably means for your case, as it is only a small area, to dig up the top soil and replace it, returf the area and fertilise/irrigate heavily. There are some specific turf fungicide formulations for fairy ring control but they are only available in commercial (read much more expensive) quantities. I don't think there are any fungicides registered for home use but if you know someone in the lawn maintenance or turf growing industry......
If you google 'fairy ring control in turf' you will find a few Aust websites with relevant info.
Hope this helps

Thanks Twosheds,
I had considered digging out and replacing the top soil and your advice has reinforced that idea. There are a couple of other irregular shaped patches but the one pictured is the worst so I'll have a go at it first and see if that remedies the problem.
Cheers,
Geoff.
