Fiddleback Queensland Maple for a special build

Hi boxmaking gurus,

This will be my first proper box as I usually do larger things. Old crocy has very generously given me some beautifully figured Queensland Maple, really lovely stuff. Thanks Crocy!

The reason for making the box is something close to my heart - it’ll be for my 2 year old nephew who has SCID (severe combined immuno disease - think boy in the bubble). He has no immune system and unfortunately he has been in hospital for 14 months of his short life. I wanted to make something special for him, so I’ll be using the QM with some African Blackwood I have, though no design yet (I’ll be started my in the coming months due to other commitments).

Any advice or suggestions for the box would be welcomed, and I have a few ideas floating around in my head.

That is beautiful timber and will make something great for your nephew. Can I suggest just a simple, locking box into which he can put important things later on.
