My new apprentice checking out the table saw.

Careful......mine rapidly progressed from inspecting the tablesaw to sitting on my knee. It just wandered into the shed one day and made itself at home.

We get about 5/6 of them as we're sitting having lunch on the patio .They are a bit shy though except for one a male with striking plumage which is game enough to allow you to feed it crumbs of beef mince we keep especially for them.
They are nesting at the moment ,never had issues with swooping as they apparently have face recognition software built in one they get to know you & the parent birds bring the younger ones alone.
I went into my shed at night a few weeks ago to find a Brush Tail Possum sitting on my table saw, he hadn't been able to get out because the doors were shut. Apparently he did not like being locked in and hasn't been back.
Wait until they like the equipment and leave a deposit.
Dont know him , didnt feed him , just dropped in to keep me company, didnt come backAttachment 478357
Let's try that again, right way up.....Attachment 478405
Judging by colouring on the back of the neck, I think it's a girl? Any Magpie experts care to confirm? The males have a more definite edge to the white patch on the back of the neck?

Looks female to me. Males have a crisper white nape on their neck.
Thanks - that's what I'd been told, but never looked closely before. We must have 30-40 of them living on our 20 acres, several generations of birds, and there's hardly ever any arguments. We do see the odd "beat up" when one gets out of line, but never any swooping or aggression toward humans. Love having them around.
I have one doing the same thing. Likes to wander in and check me out in the morning. 2 swifts regularly circle me in the shed. Then about a month ago there was a bang, crash tinkle noise. Kookaburra zoomed through the shed toward what he thought was an open rear window... got up, shook himself off and flew away. The shed now looks like a ww2 film set, with masking tape crosses on the back windows to warn him. He still does it. I’ll be working at the bench, and this missile zooms past me from the front, on his preferred shortcut to his hunting perch in the tree next to the shed (the tape works- he gets the open one!) .love them all.

I have 4 that control my garden. Oh, and they control me, if i am late to feed them one bangs on window.
Not sure about which is male and female.
cheers

One of my occasional visitors - Stumpy the one-legged king parrot. He flew into the workshop, landed on the table saw then flew over to the jointer/thicknesser. Sometimes he comes back with his bride.

Gawd, AlexS. I wouldn't get any work done if we had parrots like that around. I'd be forever watching out for them. What a beautiful bird.
Mrs P. feeds some birds and one of the Cockatoos will actually walk in and demand that he be fed if the door is open in her sewing room. The King Parrots are very vocal as well if they think they are being ignored. The Sulphur Crested Cockatoos are the Pidgeons of our town hanging around outside the bakery and cafes and you just about have to boot them away to walk down the street.
