Timber 'veneered block, timber choices for aesthetic and playing look
Hey all.
This post is about seeking your thoughts on 'veneered' timber colour combo's.
I want to reduce the cost of the infill for a set of rebate planes, and a carriage makers plane, I'm about to make. They will be brass soled, with the brass folded to come up the sides a bit.
I want to use gidgee for the infill, but an @ 1200 x 200mm x 60 mm natural edge piece is $400. But I'd get all the infill with a lot left over.
A cheaper by the $/cubic meter is natural edge, thinner pieces of gidgee. Not thick enough for a infill piece.
I'm considering cutting @12mm outer, side, veneers from gidgee, with a center piece of a blonde/white timber such as Huon or Silver Ash. Or a reddish coloured piece such as Red Cedar, or chocolate like QLD Walunt.
I want to stay with Australian native species.
The blade wedge will be either gidgee or the centre piece of timber.
Your thoughts on the colour aesthetics will be gratefully received.
