Ideas to fix f clamp

I have f clamp and the pad which sits on the movable jaw has come out. The pad sits on a ball and is retained with a ring. Any ideas how to get the ring out of the pad so I can put the pad back on?

I've tried screw driver but can't think of anything else!

I would have thought the simple application of brute force pushing the pad back onto the shaft would be all that is needed.

If by some way you are able to remove the ring, will there enough clearance between the shaft and the pad to replace it? Do you have another clamp to see if there is a big enough gap?

Have you tried leaving the ring in sitting the pad it in place and doing up the clamp up. I would expect it to just slide on

What others have said- adding a dab of Vaseline or grease will help./

A few drops of oil and a hit with a hammer should get it past that circlip. That's how it was put on Id say . The only other thing to do maybe to tighten the clamp down onto something with weight like a brick and peen the back of the pad in a little to stop the ball coming back out again . That's also how they are or were made. Ive never seen one with a circlip in there though .

Hmm I actually thought about clamping it in place and thought, 'nah no way that will work' and didnt try LOL ill give it a go when im next in the shed :D

I have a couple of the circlip types I got from a flea market and all had pads that would come off easily. They look like they are prone to eventual failure as they are a close fit. Even with oil, the ball/circlip eventually wears to the point where the pads won't stay on unless something is done. The way I secured them was to apply a few small weld spots on the edge of the pad hole.

Just fixed it by clamping it down, was so easy I can't believe I decided not to try thinking it couldn't be that easy!
