Will this bench-top cutout support a 5kg router and insert?

Morning all,

I am putting together a basic router table and insert to go into my table saw rails. It will hold a larger router, a Makita 3612 if I get it going again - or thinking the AEG 1400w if I need to get a new one. Roughly 5kg.

I am using 17mm Formply for the bench-top and have routed out a 9 mm insert for the plate. This leaves about 8mm left to support the router. The router bench itself is supported by the rails on the table saw.

I am wondering if I should add some additional support below the cutout given the router itself is 5kg. Worried it might break the ply and drop or deviate and cause the table to bow.

I'm pretty new to this, so maybe the answer is obvious!

I think you will be right, given that the weight is going to be evenly distributed around the perimeter of the plate

there is a possibility of flexing of the whole thing, I would reinforce it from underneath as you've said, to be sure

most large routers are heavy - the triton tra001 is approx 6.5kg's

Thanks Hodgo, I suppose there is no harm in reinforcing it. I feel though I often over engineer things costing time money and aesthetics :)

I'm thinking I'll glue and screw an additional 17mm piece to the base the remove the aperture for the router.

Last night I roughened up the Formply with sandpaper and glued and screwed an extra piece. Let's see how it rolls! Failing this I might try either welding up a support frame underneath. Thanks for chiming in all :)

I have had some experience here, do not use any form of ply as it will vibrate, use chipboard counter top or
something with similar density. I have used 6mm perspex to secure the router, works for me but would use
a thicker one next time. You may be able to locate chipboard cover sheets with melamine covering at a cabinet
manufacturer for a reasonable price.
