I readily admit that I'm a novice woodworker, and as such I have no idea what is and isn't a fair price when it comes to timber especially non-native species such as American Oak. The way I make my purchasing decision is by looking at how much the thing I want to build will cost to buy on Gumtree or FBMP. I then look to see if I can build it myself for cheaper or for the same price. In this particular scenario, I'm looking to build a barn door which on GT and FBMP I believe I can find the size I want for about between $300~$400. Now, that's for a new door and not a reclaimed door and it's not made out of American Oak, but the species of the wood is not important to me. Only that it is real wood and not cardboard. The door could be made out of Meranti, Tas Oak, Rosewood, cedar, Silky Oak, I don't particularly care. So, I'm searching for a suitable timber that is preferably a stable and straight-grained hardwood that's not too heavy and see if I can find it at a price that I'm looking for. So, please bear this in mind when I make my offer. I'm not saying that my offer is the fair market value for your timber, because I've absolutely no clue, only that this is what I'm prepared to pay for it.
I plan to rip the boards down the middle and laminate the two halves to hopefully get a finished board that's 125mm wide and 35mm thick to use as the stiles and rails for my door. By my calculations, I will need 4 boards, so my offer to you is $80 per board. I fully understand if it's not the price you are wanting, and no doubt you may get a better offer. I won't be offended if you turn my offer down, but please don't mistake this as some sort of haggling tactic. This is just me being completely honest with you.
Lastly, I see that you have some Silky Oak for sale. As I mentioned above, I'm not really particular about the species of wood I use. If you have other species of timber that will fit my needs and will meet my budget, then I'm prepared to consider them. I've given you the cross-sectional dimensions above. The finished length I would need is 2150mm. That's the height of my door.
Cheers,
Mike
