Does anyone know the Rapier Red's technical specification...?? Or, even better, where I can obtain some of this paint?
By specification I mean something like the Pantone colour number or the like.
TIA

The answer is .........
VHT brand high temperature engine enamel, SP119 Chevy Orange Red. The auto parts chain stores stock it.
A near perfect match, and as a bonus this stuff is the cats pyjamas as a finish for planes. Super tough and looks great. In the black, I believe it to be superior to the original japanning process, and light years ahead of domestic enamels.
FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE CAN. This is not ordinary paint, and you will not do yourself any favours by free lancing the method.
From memory:
Pick a warm and dry day.
Shake can very well.
Very light mist coat
No more than 30 minutes later second light mist coat
No more than 30 minutes later third coat - go nuts and spray it on nice and thick.
It is highly recommend to bake at the specified temperature after air curing.
It is highly recommended that you don't let your wife catch you doing it in the kitchen oven
Wow @goodvibes, thank you so very much ... !!
Have ordered a can online. Bought the plane to be a workhorse, so removing it's acquired 'patina' isn't an issue with me. Whilst I wait for the paint to arrive I'll be using David Charlesworth's methodology to get the plane iron razor sharp and ready to plane ... !!
I soaked the plane's body in EvapRust. After soaking I removed the rust with a high pressure water washer which incidentally, also removed most of the paint ... !! :o
However, it did need a repaint. :U
