Which hobby plasma cutter and air compressor?

Shops near me in Australia: Total Tools, Sydney Tools, Tool Kit Depot, Toolmart, Bunnings.

I'm considering buying a plasma cutter (and the required compressor) since I'm tiring of punishing my angle grinders. Curves also require a fair bit of manual work.
My hobby projects only require cutting of mild steel and stainless steel up to 10mm thick (rarely) but mostly 3mm and 5mm. I'd be happy to spend a total of AU$1500 on the two items - not $1500 each!

Some questions for the experts:
(1) belt drive or direct drive for a compressor? (Low noise is required so I understand a belt drive is better. Is that true?)
(2) recommended brands of plasma cutters and compressors available at the shops I've listed?
(3) any tips for use or maintenance?
