Yes Ray, the outrigger in the pic looks robust enough by itself not to require further support from the floor.

Peter without using the floor for support, how "sturdee" was your attachment. It looks quite robust! I too would like to make one.

For smaller diameter spindle work, I use this smaller steady. This will accommodate up to approx 150 mm and the larger one will allow for up to 340 mm.

Here's my take on Herman De Vries' steady rest. I started it late last year but need to make a clamping plate to finish it off.

Yes, Ern, I think I asked for a comparison in performance between the 5/8" V and 5/8" U Thompson bowl gouges. I suppose for a proper comparison both gouges would require the same grind. I'm not sure...
