You made a point that lay people do not have the experience.. so true.. which brings me to my point that most lay people will not be tackling heavy fabrication jobs. At best they may weld... -

I wouldn't buy less than a 150 amp... As most...
I wouldn't buy less than a 150 amp... As most home welders rarely work with steel more than 6mm thick a 165 to 200 is ideal. I prefer Lincoln or WIA as brands like SIP have many plastic components...

"I owned one of their 250 amp industial ones for a while" ...a workshop welder on wheels that doesn't get knocked around as much as opposed to a portable machine....still "probably 75% as good "...

For 12mm stainless they most definitely would...
For 12mm stainless they most definitely would have used a mig clinton1...given the size u described they probably dogged it down and utilised sequence welding. With the right grinder discs etc...

PS. Gasless is cheaper for the hobbyist...no bottle hire or running around for a refill! If you ran the welder 4 hrs a day five days a week, flux core would probably cost you an extra $40 a month/$2...

there is no such thing as a good cheap welder....
there is no such thing as a good cheap welder. Cheap welders have plastic parts and thin motherboards meaning they are more likely to break down and cost as much to repair.
