actually, it's excellent timber, not strong but can be heavily figured if it's Lombardy Poplar, The Cottonwood is fairly plain but great for cabinetry.

In the case of Kauri its the oldest workable timber in the world, best quality material I ever worked with.
Regum just gets harder and more difficult to work. -

I find that square section in Sugar Gum tends to 'Diamond' severely.
If its four sided quarter sawn it should be ok to use as a square but if you... -

Whatever you do dont cut the rounds less thann 100mm thick, that stuff is volatile in the end grain, add lotsa end grain sealant (even wax would do). Makes a good board though like a pale version of...
