if it is cast iron.. just hit the thing in the guts as hard as you can with a sledge hammer, six foot bar, whatever, it will shatter pretty much like glass and leave you with an easy clean up.

I have seen leaf springs used as scrapers.. they have a similar width to a plane blade but are long enough to be handled relatively safely... I'd stick with Skews advice and get the basic tools doing...

I think the nib makes it "extra special somethingorother" but don't quote me.

I know one out of 50 disstons we get through work have that nib.. I think they are commonly found on older saws.....

afaik the melting down of old 78's was for the "japan" that they used to paint on the floor around rugs.. we all know it as the black crap that wont come off.. maybe we'll re-carpet instead.

if it were me, I'd be inclined to clean the crud off the handles of the turner, put it back in the box and leave it somewhere safe for a few more years. turners will be collectors soon...
