personally, I think more than 3-4 coats is overkill, unless you need to build up the finish to meet diameter.
My recipe: sand to 400, do not wipe the dust off!
put a drop of BLO on a paper towel...

Try the Stretch pen from LauLau woodworks or the Zen version from CSUSA. The stretch is a screw on cap/ post and the Zen is a magnetized version. They both have longer bodies.

I made this desk pen by request, red corian on a TN gold soft grip chassis, Penn State funnel.

'tis true what you say about the weak link. I have experienced many a broken thread in the same spot on that style, as well as the El Grande, Ligero, etc. Certainly not a back pocket pen!...
