I use melted wax in an old electric fry pan, I recon it'd be a lot lets toxic than melted foam.

Just a thought, I'd be tempted to forget the veneer and cut up a strip of Jarrah instead and glue it on. It would be much more robust than just veneer on the edge which might get knocked...
