reduce your catalyst. 22 drops per blank is extreme. Those should be cured in no time, almost pour it right onto the spinning lathe.:p

Different colors gel at different rates. The ingredients that make the color also affect it. Work with your colors and keep track of everything.

I use liquid and dry pigments in many combinations.

If you use a lot of white, try water dispersible Titanium Dioxide. Works well and fairly inexpensive and widely available. It can be used alone...

I don't have the settleing issue, but I pour by time and not by how thick/gel the resin is. Mine is always poured liquid and gels in the mold. There is the problem of creating air bubbles if you wait...

Yes, less catalyst will result in a slower cure and visa-versa. Some claim that an increase in catalyst will make for a brittle blank. I haven't had that problem, but I don't add 25% either.

I watched a video and messed with the camera settings. The colors are closer now, but it still just doesn't look right. It has fingerprints on it, but I was just trying to get a good pic for once....

The pen isn't heavy at all, even my MIL loves the feel of them.

The color in the second photo, is very close to the pen, but monitors vary.

I tried a black background, but the pic was much worse. I just can't get the pic thing down without the sun. I will get a better pic today, as the sun seems to be peeking here and there.

Terrible pic, but here is a platinum rollerball Navigator. The colors are supossed to be blue, white, and black. Has a custom centerband and finial.

Try this, it works great for me. After appliying your decal, waterslide, etc. , let it dry overnight (it has to be dry), then put a light coat of CA over it on the lathe. That seals it up. I would...

Two things...
If the wood is an oily wood, it won't stick,
and most people that do WW casts, use Alumilte. They say there is a better success rate since it doesn't shrink.

CA will work and so will epoxy.

This is my first Navigator, it's Platinum in a Magma blank.

First...if you are generating enough heat to release the addhesive bond, the bond is the least of your worries. Cracking and melting come to mind, depending on material.
Second...the pen will not...

Dimple?? I guess if you look at it just right it does appear that way. It's just the way the colors are that gives that illusion. They are all round and polished.
The appearance doesn't change much...

These are the way I'm doing my samples now. Saves time and then I don't have to make a pen for every new color.

I found the pic of the aluminum pen I did a couple years ago. I think it might still be around here someplace.

Aluminum is fun to turn. I used a solid rod of 6160 to make a sierra. I'll see if I can find a pic.

I assembled the green one in the middle, but can't get a decent pic. I can only get borderline pics when the sun is out and there is no sun.:-

The one on the left is pretty even throughout the blank and the teal one on the right does fade from the bottom up. I'm finishing some others and will get pics of them and try to get a side shot of...

Finally got two of them turned. The depth is incredible.

Not sure what kind of tips you want.
I don't wait until the resin is starting to gel, but rather do it by time. I know how long it takes to gel, so I pour it before that so it still flows and...

Looks pretty good for a first cast.

I pour and can turn the blank in 57 minutes. I usually cast a lot while I'm set up, so I do this between pours or if someone wants something in a hurry....

They look pretty good from what I can see... wish the pic was bigger. :wink:

When re-casting shavings, the color is quite washed out. It isn't as brilliant as the original blank. At least with the PR shavings...

It will bond just fine if it's just resin.

However, as stated, if it has surfacing wax in it or it is added, it will not bond.:2tsup:

I personally, would paint the tube black.

I showed the customer the blank and it created 3 more orders.

This is an order for someone that asked for a pearl white blank w/a blue cross. Hard to tell from the bad pic, one day I will work on that.

I only turn between centers and have for quite some time.
If your HS and TS are out of alignment, or your blanks aren't square it won't help anything.
There isn't a problem with crushing anything...
