Might work
Acetone will remove silicone but what it will do otherwise I do not know. However, maybe better than sulphuric acid I would think. Acetone will certianly remove any stain or finish.

I used some Queelah (Sounds like) the New Guinea timber and as a surround I used Tassie Oak.
I turned round discs of the dark NG timber and screwed the Tassi Oak on the sides and made 25mm round... -
