Hi carvin' mark a relief cut is put in the sculpture to allow the timber to expand & contract.By maintenance i mean regular applications of oil when needed.

Hi schaf cracking shouldn't be a problem if maintenace is keep up to the piece.Also you can put a relief in it to stop this problem.

This is my first attempt at doing a relief carving and probably my last.I'll just stick with chainsaw carving i think.
