sounds to me like my welding trick is the best way to do it as you don't have to remove any timber to get access to the nail. chisel / drill note required.

I ended up dropping the armature off at my local...
I ended up dropping the armature off at my local power tool repairer and he replaced the bearings with aftermarket parts for $50. Very happy with that :)
