Depending on the size and layout of the granny flat, insulation is the best bang for buck you can do. Putting it in the walls may be problematic, but if you can it would be well worth it.

I use old Merbau and Titebond 3.
I also put as much pressure on the joints using Bessey clamps as I can but I do not... -
The bark on the tree looks just like an Hakea...
The bark on the tree looks just like an Hakea (Pincushion) that I have. The leaves are different, but it may be part of the same family.
