Why not look at a combo machine and sell the GMC thicknesser. The upgraded ML392 is 10" in both modes and is around $1000 (maybe less, not sure) at Carbatec.

I just measured my Triton 1/2" bits and the shafts are 40mm. I also have a cheapo generic set of 1/2 bits and they have shafts of 37mm. Seems to me the problem is the bits you have are too short.
