I'm with powderpost and tea lady, I turn mainly for the pure enjoyment of it. If somebody wants something made then yes they will get charged for it. But not very often.

Corbs just cut that stump off that is at the base of the tree, it should give you some idea of what it will be like.

rough turn it then impregnate it with resin in a vacuum chamber then finish it off would be my suggestion.

Peter, it all comes down to budget, while it is good to buy a big lathe straight up, if you don't spend the money on a decent one to start with it could put you off from the get go, where as if you...

Can't say I have ever had this problem Harry, definately sounds like you are doing it up too tight, also are you locking your spindle when trying to undo it while mounted on the lathe.

Yeah had mine a couple of months absoloutly love it, I use it mainly for roughing logs down to size on the lathe, it is also the best tool i have found for stripping bark off of logs. A 4 ft long 40...

the smaller refined knob looks heaps better, i would have made the base of the knob smaller so it didn't cover the grain of the lid as much.:2tsup:

I have picked up a woodfast dust extractor with a 3 phase motor and am going to convert it, any thoughts on whether to change the motor to a 1 phase unit or just use a VFD, comments please.

Very nice indeed, if you want to get rid of the voids you will need to put it in a vacuum chamber, which i thoroughly recommend. But i think in this piece the voids match the burl.
