This is a VERY early model and though Shopsmith has part available for it, it is really not worth the effort unless you up the HP on the motor.

This one is one of there earliest models and is underpowered. Go to the Shopsmith site for lots of useful information on what to look for in second hand model.

I would have to say Carba-tec is great for service. My tool rest sheered through the second day due to a faulty cast - it took them a couple of days to get a replacement.

I have had my mini wood lathe from Carba-tec for about 3 or 4 weeks I guess I have clocked up to close to 80 hours already and not had a problem.

I would HIGHLY recommend the expense as it is a tool that will last for a very long time and it is used in EVER pen - I personally think its an essential part of pen turners kit.

Yes made 2 pens and 1 failure - the two wooden pens look great, but a crack developed in the tiger acrylic. Oh well.
